This article is an interview with Edward Said shortly after 9/11 happened. In it, some of Said's ideas connect with ISAs and RSAs, "Heart of Darkness," the Other, as well as Said's own Orientalism. Do you agree with the ideas behind Said's opinion of the US response to 9/11?
Rachel,
ReplyDeleteIn general, I agree w/ Said. I think the US response to 9/11 was as he describes, but I'd define it differently. I'd say that Pres. Bush was like Captain Ahab, and that the WMDs were Moby Dick. I think Bin Laden (in retrospect)became sort of an incidental figure. You note that we have a movie dedicated to his death, and that the celebration over his death were pretty short-lived. We're always looking for Moby Dick--developing nations and their WMDs.
